POLICE are launching a crackdown on anti-social behaviour in coastal communities and have vowed to deal firmly with culprits.

A neighbourhood taskforce, comprising five people, is being sent into east Cleveland troublespots by Cleveland Police.

Team spokesman Sergeant Dave Sutherland said: "Those engaging in anti-social behaviour will be dealt with firmly and, where appropriate, prosecuted.

"But we will also be working with organisations to help divert these young people to other, safer activities and areas where they can cause no harm."

The taskforce will concentrate on Marske, New Marske and Redcar east. Sgt Sutherland said the aim was to improve the quality of life for residents by tackling the problems caused by underage drinking and youths congregating on streets.

Residents are to be briefed at regular meetings about the operation, while police are hoping for vital feedback and tip-offs.

The team will work closely with Redcar and Cleveland's Community Safety Department and local agencies.

Sgt Sutherland said the police wanted to work with the youngsters.

He said: "We are looking at working with the local community, for them to come and speak to us and identify to us where the problems are.

"Parents are welcome to come and raise concerns they have about their youngsters.

"But, we are looking to work with the young people themselves.

"If they can point out deficiencies in the recreation framework, we will do what we can and work at the problem and work with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

"If there is nothing for them to do, invariably they will get into mischief.''

The team will go into local secondary schools to raise awareness of the issues surrounding anti-social behaviour and citizenship.

Sgt Sutherland said: "This is an ongoing operation that will involve a lot of partnership work.

"It is putting people first -the rights of law-abiding people in these communities above the anti-social behaviour of young hooligans."

Youngsters causing problems will be arrested and charged. Letters will be sent to the parents of others.
