SURVIVORS of the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocide will stand together in the North-East next week to highlight the need for lessons to be learned from atrocities.
On Tuesday, Newcastle Civic Centre will host the city council's ceremony to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
Victims will be remembered through the lighting of a candle by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Margaret Carter.
Rwandan refugee Philomena Uwamariiya will give an account of her experiences of the Rwandan genocide.
Councillor Nigel Todd, chairman of the Holocaust Memorial Day Working Group, said: "Holocaust Memorial Day in Newcastle has become a people's remembrance and a living remembrance of the victims of genocide throughout history, and an expression of our determination to prevent similar inhumanity in the future."
