POLICE have launched an investigation after an unknown device, thought to be a pipe bomb, blew up a car in a residential area.
The incident was in the Melrose Street area of Hartlepool on Monday night when the explosion shattered the car's windows and blew open the doors.
The device, thought to involve a pipe and gunpowder, had been placed in the driver's side footwell of the Vauxhall Cavalier. It is being examined by forensic officers.
Police said it was too early to know what caused the explosion, but youngsters are believed to be behind the vandalism.
Residents spoke later of their shock. A 55-year-old woman, whose home is only yards away, said: "I think it is absolutely terrible, things like this happening."
Crews from Stanton Fire Station were called at about 8.30pm.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Hartlepool police on (01429) 302126.
