PUPILS queued up on Monday for the launch of a new tuck shop that only sells fruit.
Consett Junior School opened a fruit bar to encourage youngsters to adopt a more healthy lifestyle.
The pilot scheme was only open to Year 3 pupils, but more than half of them - about 25 - took up the option.
Headmaster David Yates said: "It has had a very good response. We wanted to encourage children to eat more fruit and take up a more healthy lifestyle."
The school decided to set up the project as part of its successful bid to win the Government's Healthy Schools' Standard award, which it will receive this Friday.
The scheme was backed by Derwentside Primary Care Trust (PCT), as part of its Why5? campaign, which aims to get children to eat five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables a day.
Liz Moran, Why 5? project co-ordinator with the trust, said: "By raising their awareness to the importance of eating fruit and vegetables every day, we will hopefully see fitter and healthier people in the future."
