INSPECTORS have praised a Derwentside school, but told teachers that pupils must be encouraged to become more independent.
Leadgate Community Junior School in Alder Grove, Leadgate, near Consett, has been classed as 'good' after its Ofsted inspection last year.
The report stated that staff and governors contributed strongly to its success. "Pupils get on very well together and with staff members," it said. "There is an atmosphere of mutual respect and tolerance."
The school was praised for above average results in religious education and for successfully integrating more children with special needs. But inspectors found that the pupils lacked confidence and were under-performing in exams.
"Lack of confidence inhibits the learning of many children," the report said. "Pupils do not do themselves justice in tests.
"Results are disappointing and mask the standards that inspection shows them to be reaching in lessons."
Headteacher Jane Cain said: "The school is aware of those areas for development highlighted in the report.
"We will continue to address the issues raised to improve standards and self-confidence in our children."
