OWNERS who fail to clean up after their dogs could fall foul of an initiative launched in Richmond.
Eight of Richmondshire District Council's ground maintenance staff have been given extra powers to reduce the amount of dog fouling they have to deal with.
From now on, they can issue fixed penalty notices to owners who do not clear up after their pets.
Each of the crew has been trained to deal with problems which may arise when issuing tickets. A number have already handed out their first penalties.
"We get more calls from the public about dog fouling than anything else,'' said the head of the environmental protection unit, Sean Little.
"Hopefully, this increased surveillance will act as a deterrent and compliment the activities of the council's regular dog warden scheme.''
The initiative was introduced at the request of the ground maintenance staff, who can issue fixed penalties of £50.
Anyone who wishes to report an offence or an area which requires attention can contact the council on (01748) 829100.
