REGULARS at a village social club have raised more than £5,000 for children.
Grange Villa Workmen's Social Club in Grange Villa, near Chester-le-Street, has spent nine months raising the cash.
There were social evenings, raffles and customers raised sponsorship through the Great North Run and Great North Walk.
They raised £5,200 for new equipment for the Tree Tops children's ward at the University Hospital of North Durham.
Club steward Stan Short said: "Grange Villa gets a lot of bad press because of the problems we have with crime and drugs.
"But this fundraising effort shows that we also have a great community spirit here. Everyone at the club got involved and made this a real success."
