A DISUSED primary school in Stockton is to be transformed into a community resource centre thanks to a £1m boost.
The funding, from the European Regional Development Fund, will pay for the work to the former Newtown Infants School, which has stood empty for three years.
The conversion, due to be completed in September, will benefit residents from the Newtown, Newham Grange, Primrose Hill and Wrensfield areas of Stockton, and create four jobs.
The project is managed by residents in partnership with Stockton Borough Council, and the centre will provide bases for agencies to work from, offering training and education to the community.
This will include free computer access on a drop-in basis, leisure activities and advice and guidance services.
A playgroup and creche will also be available for residents using the centre.
