PEOPLE in one of Teesside's communities now have their own history newsletter.

The first edition of the Heruteu Herald has been delivered in the Headland area of Hartlepool in the past few days.

The name of the eight-page, quarterly newsletter is connected with the Headland, but people will have to wait for a future issue to find out the the history behind Heruteu.

Topics in the first edition include James Clark's painting of the 1914 German bombardment of the Headland, the history of St Hilda's Church and the foundation of Hartlepool Boys Brigade.

A regular feature will be a section of shorter items about Headland history.

Kevin Kelly, chairman of the Headland Local History Group, said: "It was a proud day for everyone involved in the newsletter to see the first edition rolling off the presses.

"On the word Heruteu, it is linked with the Headland, but we would like people to write to us and give their views on what they think it means and where they think it originated."

The Herald is published by the Headland Local History Group, Tees Archaeology and Hartlepool Borough Council.

It is funded by the North Hartlepool Partnership, which is using money from regional development agency One NorthEast to revitalise the Headland and north Hartlepool.
