A small and exclusive hotel is in line for a top award.

Shallowdale House is on a shortlist of nine for a national honour in the England for Excellence Awards, to be presented at Kensington Palace in April.

Surrounded by spectacular scenery overlooking scores of miles of the Howardian Hills and the North York Moors National Park, at Ampleforth, it was a private house until it was taken over six years ago by Anton van der Horst and Phillip Gill.

They moved to the area after running a successful guest house in Masham.

Amsterdam-born Mr van der Horst worked in Harrogate as a hairdresser, while Mr Gill was administrator for the York Festival.

The hotel has recently scooped the White Rose Award, which is run by the Yorkshire Tourist Board, in its category.
