Regional director of public health, Dr Bill Kirkup, said: "Many who are given the chance to try fruit and vegetables enjoy the taste and begin to ask for them at home, potentially sowing the seeds for a healthier future. That would be a major step forward in reducing the chronically high levels of ill-health which blight the North-East."
Schoolchildren and older people are teaming up to grow fruit and vegetables on allotments in Gateshead and South Tyneside.
Disadvantaged older people in Gateshead and South Tyneside are also receiving affordable fresh fruit and vegetables thanks to a food bank.
Deliveries are made to day centres and sheltered accommodation. So far, 14 sites are involved and the aim is to increase this to 25.
Children, pregnant women and leisure services are the main focus of work for the Why 5? initiative in Derwentside and Pelton.
Schools are given support and advice on breakfast clubs, fruit bars and healthy eating policy.
About 1,500 year seven pupils are expected to attend three events designed to introduce youngsters to fruit and vegetables.
Children up to the age of 11 in Easington are being encouraged by the Gimme 5 gang. Super Sonic Strawberry, Pippa Pea, Cool Crunch Carrot, Jumping Joe Juice and Banana Peel help to get the message over at local schools.
Strive For 5 is the adult campaign designed to encourage families to increase consumption.
