RESIDENTS are being urged to have a say on a safety scheme designed to reduce accidents along a busy road.
Accident records show there has been one serious and eight less serious accidents along the A1052 Dairy Lane, in Houghton-le-Spring, in the three years to August.
A recent speed survey revealed that a significant number of vehicles using the road broke the limit by travelling faster than 40mph in the 30mph zone.
To address these problems, traffic engineers with Sunderland City Council have come up with a safety scheme to reduce the number of accidents by lowering the speed of traffic and providing improved facilities for pedestrians.
Proposals include a 30mph high visibility gateway beginning at the junction with the A690 roundabout at the east end of the A1052, indicating a local safety zone.
The feature would have a road marking covering the carriageway, which will encourage speeding motorists to slow down.
There would also be an extended footpath and bus lay-by opposite The Rectory, in the Dairy Lane eastbound approach to The Broadway.
Detailed drawings of the proposals are on show until the end of the month in the main reception at Houghton Kepier School, Dairy Lane, Houghton.
People have until February 13 to respond.
