DALES farmers have been warned to be on their guard in the wake of a spate of burglaries across Swaledale and Wensleydale.

Quad bikes and tools have been among thousands of pounds worth of property stolen in Richmondshire since Christmas.

On a number of occasions, the thieves have not had to work too hard for their haul, entering unlocked sheds and outbuildings to find what they are looking for.

"People should not presume, just because they live miles from anywhere, a thief is miles away,'' said a spokesman for the North Yorkshire Police, Tony Lidgate, yesterday.

"It seems, almost every day, there is someone out there ready to steal the tools of the farmers' trade and the rate they are disappearing suggests there is a ready market for them.

"A quad bike can cost thousands of pounds and yet, often, they're left outside at night or in an unlocked outbuilding. We really would like to see valuables locked away safely if possible."

Farmers have also been urged to consider having their quad bikes or farm machinery chipped or security marked. Police also advise that they make a note of any serial numbers.

"Even if tools or equipment are recovered, returning it to its rightful owner can sometimes prove problematical," said Mr Lidgate.

He went on: "People can also help deter the thieves just by being a good neighbour.

"If you see a flatbed lorry or a van with equipment or a quad bike strapped to the back, ask questions and, if you're suspicious, alert police with registration numbers.

"It may be nothing - but, if it is a thief and you play a part in catching them, then it will be an entirely different story.

"You could be saving your neighbour thousands of pounds and helping to convict a criminal who may not be free to steal from others in future."

Farmers who would like more information on how to have security chips installed in farm machinery, or about any other crime prevention initiatives, can contact North Yorkshire Police on (01609) 789827.
