ABOUT 70 pupils from a Darlington school had an afternoon of fun with numbers as they celebrated the opening of their games library.
Parents and helpers at Reid Street Primary School, with representatives from other local schools, attended the event yesterday.
The launch event was so successful, that it was extended by half an hour because children and their parents became so absorbed in playing with the new games.
A cheque for £200 was presented to the number games library from the school's Parent Teacher Association (PTA), bringing the total donated by the group to £500.
Companies including Abbey National, Cummins and Woolworths also gave money, bringing the overall total to just over £1,000.
The money has been spent on providing about 160 games that will be used by Key Stage One pupils.
Jane Knowlson, numeracy co-ordinator at Reid Street Primary School, said: "Since our launch last May the pupils have worked incredibly hard to make the dream become a reality.
"By using the number games library, children will learn that maths can be fun and develop new skills through play.
"By having the opportunity to take the games home, all the family can have fun and become part of the learning experience."
Councillor Stephen Harker, Darlington Borough Council's cabinet member for education, said: "The efforts of staff and pupils alike, especially Mrs Knowlson, must be recognised and praised.
"Through their hard work and the kind generosity of the PTA and other local companies, the children now have a valuable resource to hand that will provide them with a positive and fun way to develop their maths skills."
