COLLEGE principal Sarah Farley has raised more than £1,000 for charity after swapping the comfort of the classroom for the chilly wilds of the Himalayas.
Ms Farley, chief executive of Darlington College of Technology, completed a sponsored Christmas trek to Mount Everest Basecamp, in aid of the town's St Teresa's Hospice.
Travelling more than 150 miles through Nepal and the Himalayas, she reached Basecamp in glorious sunshine, but with temperatures at about minus 20C.
"We spent most nights camping under the stars and a couple of nights in lodges, which were colder than the tents.
"It was a once in a lifetime trip, but perhaps I will go somewhere warmer next time," she said.
Hospice director Jane Bradshaw said: "We admire Sarah for rising to the challenge and completing this gruelling expedition.
