A PROJECT aiming to steer youngsters away from petty crime and disorder is proving a success.
Since April last year, Consett Churches Detached Youth Project has funded a worker in the village of Dipton, near Stanley.
Matty Christer has spent two nights a week helping young people work through problems and advising on issues from drugs to first aid.
Mr Christer has talked to young people on the streets, and arranged a number of activities, including rock climbing, skiing and bowling. He also supervised the youngsters as they put on a Christmas meal for elderly people in the village.
Freda Toon, community capacity worker in Dipton, who has been working with Mr Christer, said: "I have worked with Consettt Churches Detached Youth Project at Dipton since April 2003.
"In a short space of time, they have made a distinct impact on village life by providing a range of social activities and practical support and advice for our young people."
