Guisborough residents are angry over plans to introduce parking charges on the town's cobbled high street.

Motorists can park free for two hours on the cobbles in Westgate, which is a disc parking zone. But that could change if proposals by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to raise more cash through parking charges in the run up to its March budget.

Guisborough Councillor Keith Pudney, who was involved in successfully opposing a proposal to introduce charges in Westgate ten years ago, said: "Disc parking has been an effective tool for the last ten years. People purchase a disc and can park for free for up to two hours.

"It would have an adverse effect on the commercial well-being of the town as well as residents and individuals coming to shop in Guisborough.

"I am also against the proposal to charge residents in the town centre £30 for carparking permits.

"It doesn't seem fair to charge people more because of where they live, rather than what they earn."

Cabinet chairman Eric Empson said: "Councillors are looking at many ways of raising money and saving cash, but some may be unpopular.

"These are just suggestion to look at - possibilities. This list will be considered at a later meeting. We realise that pay parking in Guisborough could be unpopular, but nothing has been decided."
