AN initiative encouraging people to cycle to work has been set up.
The scheme, a partnership between The Five Lamps Organisation, in Thornaby, and Broker North-East, provides free bikes for unemployed residents who want to get back to work.
It will provide adults with information, advice and guidance to help them make career decisions, give advice on benefits and issue 40 bikes and helmets.
To qualify for a free bike, residents must be over 18, in receipt of a sickness-related benefit and have an offer of employment.
Paul Christon, of The Five Lamps, said: "As well as saving on bus fares, or the cost of running a car, cycling has enormous benefits for people's health, as well as the environment.
"I've used a bike to travel to work and it is surprising how much better it makes you feel throughout the day."
