YOUNGSTERS celebrated the arrival of 700 new books at their school yesterday thanks to a £4,000 grant.
Children from the playgroup, nursery and foundation stage class at Cromwell Road Primary School, in South Bank, will benefit from the investment from Sure Start Grangetown and South Bank.
The books will give children, aged between two and five, the chance to talk about what they are reading, as well as introducing them to key words.
Cromwell Road headteacher Brenda Urwin said: "I'm absolutely delighted. It has enabled us to provide a greater variety of books and because they're nice and new, the children love to take them home."
Sure Start programme manager Catherine Pickering said: "We are delighted to be able to develop our partnership with Cromwell Road in order to meet our joint objectives of making reading enjoyable and accessible to all families."
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's Mayor Norah Cooney opened the school's improved reading facility.
