A PILOT scheme will help schools meet the costs of travelling to two of the region's museums.
Killhope, the North of England Lead Mining Museum, in Upper Weardale, and The Bowes Museum, in Barnard Castle, both County Durham, have joined forces with the Rural Transport Partnership to help schools meet the costs of travelling to visit them.
Ian Forbes, the manager at Killhope, said: "Both museums have identified that transport costs are a significant problem for schools."
Funding has come from the Countryside Agency to cover up to 75 per cent of transport costs.
The scheme will run from now until the end of March.
Mr Forbes said: "We hope there will be a favourable response to the pilot to allow us to keep some sort of scheme going in the future.
"It is an excellent scheme and we are pleased to be able to give this opportunity to schools that otherwise might not be able to visit us."
Schools wanting further information on the scheme can contact the museums.
