A HEADTEACHER is bidding goodbye to staff and pupils at a Darlington school after a teaching career spanning more than a quarter of a century.
Doreen Procter is retiring after working for 27 years at Raventhorpe Preparatory School, in Carmel Road North.
She joined the school in 1977, employed as a classroom teacher by the school's founder and former headteacher, Cicely Jaques.
Mrs Procter became Raventhorpe's second headteacher six years ago following the death of Mrs Jaques, at the age of 85.
"It was a very hard act to follow, because parents and teachers had loved her and she commanded a lot of respect," said Mrs Procter, 58, of Darlington.
"I had acted as her deputy for many years before her death, and so I was growing into the role.
"I feel I have advanced the school in the curriculum, but kept all the things the parents wanted, such as traditional values and discipline.
"And I am leaving behind a wonderful team of staff who are very loyal and dedicated."
Ian Thompson will become the first male headteacher at Raventhorpe when he takes over in September.
Mr Thompson, who is presently director of studies at Aysgarth School, in Bedale, said he was looking forward to taking on the role.
The keen sportsman and amateur actor is already spending Thursdays at the school in order to meet staff, parents and teachers.
He will also be attending the school's open day, which will take place on Friday, February 20, from 2pm to 3.30pm.
