THE father of a 16-year-old girl who died after plunging 200ft from cliffs, said last night: "This must not be allowed to happen again."

Terry Ellwood was speaking after an inquest into the death of his daughter Terri Ann, from Peterlee, east Durham.

She fell from cliffs near the Blue Dolphin holiday camp at Filey, North Yorkshire, in October, after going on a midnight walk during her first holiday without her parents. Terri was staying with her boyfriend, Liam Heron, 15, and his parents.

The Scarborough inquest heard yesterday that the teenagers met up with two other holidaymakers and decided to go for a walk along the coastal path.

The coroner was told she had consumed enough alcohol to affect her "balance, co-ordination, judgement and night vision".

Miss Graham and Terri, who were walking in front of the other two, plunged down the cliff.

Miss Graham, who suffered leg injuries, said: "We shuffled down a bit and that was it. I don't remember anything else apart from waking up."

Mr Ellwood said planks had been added to the fence since the accident. But he added: "We still think something safer should be done before any other young bairns fall over the side. I don't want it happening to anyone else."

North Yorkshire East Coroner Michael Oakley recorded a verdict of accidental death. He said: "I have to say it was extremely foolhardy, given that they had no lights, given that it was extremely dark.

"They had no knowledge of the area and the evidence points to the fact they didn't know cliffs were there."
