STUDENT basketballers hope to shoot their way into the record books.

Players from Durham University are staging a 12-hour charity scoring marathon on Saturday, in the car park of the Tesco store, in Dragonville, from 9am.

They hope to be the first to set a world record for the most two-step lay-up scores.

The university basketball club, which has teams in the British University Sports Association's northern league, held a similar event last year but did not have it officially recorded.

There are records for other types of scoring, such as dunking but none so far for two-step lay-offs.

About 37 club members will take part in the event in 90-minute shifts.

Organiser Amy Riches said: "We scored 10,000 scores last year, which we did fairly easily within the time. We are hoping we can get 12,500 this year.

"We have got officials to be there to make sure its properly recorded.

"Hopefully it will challenge other teams to try to have a go.

"It will be a very good day. Last year there was a basket every 3.7 seconds. Hopefully we'll do better this year.''

Sponsorship from the event will be shared by the club and the charity Children North-East.

The club plans to use its share to buy new kit and it is also hoping to launch a coaching scheme for local school pupils.
