DURHAM Army Cadets lifted the overall winners shield as 120 cadets moved in on Otterburn Camp last Sunday for the annual regional cross-country championships.
They triumphed over a strong field as runners from Cleveland, Durham, Northumbria, Humberside and South Yorkshire and Yorkshire North and West army cadet forces competed over the 6km course in a challenging and exciting race.
Durham claimed the overall victory as the junior boys, senior boys and junior girls all took second place and the senior girls third.
There were terrific performances from two Bishop Auckland youngsters - 14-year-old Chris Marriott won the junior boys race and 15-year-old Jody Gibson beat an impressive senior girls field to take first place.
Cleveland finished third overall. The senior boys won the trophy in their class with an excellent performance from second-placed 18-year-old Daniel Gilgannon, from Norton Royal Engineers detachment.
The senior girls also took home a trophy, winning the shield when an exceptional race by 16-year-old Ashley Readman, of Thornaby Green Howards, put her in third place.
Despite 14-year-old Rachel Bingham, of Loftus Green Howards, winning the junior girls race and 15-year-old Michaela Court finishing second, the junior girls team took third place. The junior boys team also finished third.
Athletes from both Durham and Cleveland will now represent the area in the national championships at Warcop on March 20.
