TEENAGE show jumper Adam Valks has continued his recent run of good form with a major win at the Rowallan Junior Premier Show in Scotland.
The 13-year-old from Barnard Castle was among many of the best pony show jumpers in the country to journey north of the border to contest the latest in the series of British Show Jumping Association junior premier shows.
He came home with the Scottish indoor 138cm championship title under his belt after a fine win on his chestnut mare Golden Fortune.
His mother Janet Valks said: "It was the first time Adam had ever won this title and he was delighted.
"Only three ponies made it into the timed jump-off and Adam was drawn first. I told him he'd have to pull off a special performance and the crowd really got behind him and were roaring him on - the atmosphere was fantastic.
"Golden Fortune is a pony that can turn on a sixpence and there were two big gallops on the course too - we knew Adam's time was going to be hard to beat."
That certainly proved the case as Adam took the £300 first prize, a sash and a trophy. The youngster has recently gained sponsorship from equestrian firm Nutri-Science and this was a fine reward for his backers.
Mrs Valks added: "Nutri-Science has proved a huge help with keeping Golden Fortune on the road. She has trouble with contracted heels and can't wear shoes - their products have helped to bring her back to health and allowed her to continue to compete.
"The firm are also now sponsoring Olympic show jumper John Whitaker, so Adam is in good company."
Adam was also placed in several of the supporting classes at Rowallan, with both Golden Fortune and Mighty Flyer, collecting another five top six placings.
He is also through to the final of the winter 138cm series, a major championship due to be staged at the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead this summer.
He won the winter 138cm second round at Arena UK in Lincolnshire, again on the consistent Golden Fortune and in a top quality field.
"We'd only gone to Arena UK for that one class and Adam beat 46 ponies over three tough rounds," added Mrs Valks. "There were really good riders and ponies in the class and he finished two seconds clear of the field."
Adam, who has already won gold for England at Home Pony International level, is rapidly making a name for himself as one of the best 138cm (13.2hh) show jumpers in the country and is likely to continue to do so over the coming months.
