THE development of a riverside nightspot that has intrigued passers-by for months has come to fruition.
The Chase Boathouse, in the former Brown's Boathouse, on the banks of the Wear, in Durham, opened last night.
Ultimate Leisure has spent more than £3m to restore the 19th Century landmark to create a 600-capacity cafe bar.
For nearly a year, the building's progress has attracted the interest of people walking across Elvet Bridge.
Now it is up and running and Ultimate Leisure, of Newcastle, believe its riverside location and balconies overlooking the water will make it a big attraction.
Area manager Carl Hornsby said: "It's been a long time coming but the interest it has created has been fantastic.
"You can imagine that when there are events on the river like the regatta it will be brilliant.''
The plans for the venue were originally to demolish the old building but the scheme had to be rethought and scaled down because of the proximity of the city's major water main.
Mr Hornsby said planners had insisted the character of the building, which has long links with the city's rowing tradition, should be maintained.
The original scheme was refused planning permission.
But the company got the go-ahead after successfully appealing against the decision.
The venue will employ about 45 people.
