TWENTY white doves have been released to mark the 20th anniversary of the Butterwick Hospice.
Mary Butterwick, who founded the hospice in 1984 following the death of her husband, John, released the birds to mark each year of care given by the hospice.
Mrs Butterwick said: "The doves, symbols of peace, are a beautiful, symbolic gesture for us. We are very grateful to the people of Stockton and beyond. It is their hospice, and it is because of them we are able to offer our services to local people with life-limiting illnesses."
The release of the doves was supported by the Moores Fitness and Leisure company, which raised £2,000.
Don Waites, from the company, said: "We have supported the hospice with raffles and sponsored events in the past, and were delighted to take part in the 20th anniversary."
Hospice fundraiser Andrew Brown said: "For 20 years, we have provided symptom relief and specialist support to thousands of local people with life-limiting illnesses. In that time, the hospice has touched the hearts of the community.
"This year, we want to say thank-you for the fantastic support we have received, and ask people to continue with their wonderful backing in our 20th anniversary and beyond."
This week marks the beginning of a year of fundraising.
