A COUNCIL has been criticised for refusing to carry out road safety work on a lane in Spennymoor, despite years of campaigning by families.
People living in the Carr Lane area have been asking Durham County Council to improve safety on a bend near their homes.
They have called for the council to rectify an adverse camber on the bend at Kirkdale, and more than 100 residents signed a petition calling for the corner to be improved.
Sedgefield Borough Councillor Ben Ord is appealing to the county council to rethink levelling out the bend before it installs speed cushions in the area later this year.
He said: "It is now 11 years since a van crashed into a utility room on the Kirkdale bend. Since then there have been several more accidents.
"To install speed cushions down the road but not correct the adverse camber, which is where most the accidents happen, does not make sense."
A spokesman for Durham County Council said: "A proposed housing development in the area could see some major changes to the road, with the addition of a T-junction or roundabout.
"This may have the desired affect of reducing the speed of traffic, which is the concern on the road. The bend at Kirkdale does not have a bad accident record."
