A 28-year-old man is recovering in hospital after sustaining serious injuries when he fell 30ft into a disused tank at a former chemical site.

The man is believed to have been clambering on a pipe at the former Steetley Works in the West View area of Hartlepool when he slipped and fell into the derelict settling tank.

He was with another man at the time and it is believed the pair, who were trespassing, had had a few drinks.

Police, ambulance and fire crews were called to the scene at around 6.45pm on Monday, and the man was rescued by firefighters using a ladder.

He was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of Hartlepool suffering from multiple fractures.

A police spokesman said: "His condition is described as stable but poorly. Police enquiries are continuing into this incident." The second man did not fall into the tank and was able to summon the emergency services on his mobile phone.
