SIR BOBBY ROBSON last night demanded extra effort from all of his stars in a bid to ensure Newcastle United's two major goals this season are achieved.
The Magpies welcome Real Mallorca to Tyneside tonight in the UEFA Cup fourth round first leg, with their eyes firmly fixed on a place in the last eight of the competition.
After the Primera Liga strugglers' visit St. James' Park, Newcastle will turn their attentions again to a Premiership trip to Tottenham on Sunday, where a positive result is essential as they look to strengthen their hold on a Champions League place.
Both targets - success in the UEFA Cup and finishing fourth in the league - go hand in hand and Robson is refusing to compromise on either of them.
But the experienced Newcastle boss is calling for for a reproduction of the type of form that clinched a top-four place in the 2002-03 campaign - starting against Mallorca tonight.
"We are aware that we are not playing as well as we did last year," said the former Barcelona coach, whose side have already knocked out Valerenga, NAC Breda and FC Basel.
"In some games we have not played as fluidly as we did last season.
"But so long as we keep the philosphy of being difficult to beat and improve our quality of play then we will be all right.
"We have two big targets and we will have to improve our game to reach them.
"We want all players to play to their maximum. We are looking to improve and it's not just one part of the team, it's an overall improvement that we are looking for.
"There's hardly a player in the side who can't improve. If we can get five per cent more from every player, that's another 50 per cent of better football that we can produce from a team point of view.
"The most consistent player in our team has been the keeper (Shay Given) and that's because he only has to mainly use his hands!"
Midfielder Kieron Dyer, striker Craig Bellamy (both hamstring) and winger Darren Ambrose (muscle) have all declared themselves fit to face the Spaniards.
However, Robson does not want to risk all three so soon after injury and Dyer may be the unfortunate absentee.
There is a doubt over centre-back Jonathan Woodgate's fitness after picking up a virus this week, while Lee Bowyer serves the third of a six-match European ban.
Bellamy, who has scored four goals in as many starts since his return from a career-threatening knee injury, is likely to partner Alan Shearer in attack with Shola Ameobi on the bench.
Ameobi's double against Valerenga in the last round secured Newcastle's progress. And Robson said: "He came on in that second leg and, as much as anyone else, won us the game because he got two goals.
"He had a fantastic second half. But Bellamy is a different player. He is very quick and he can puncture square defences with his pace. He is a good commodity for us."
Mallorca, who Robson watched lose 3-2 to Barcelona at the weekend, have former Newcastle target Miquel Angel Nadal in their squad.
The 37-year-old travelled to Tyneside but is unlikely to feature tonight. However, coach Luis Aragones, who was in charge at the Nou Camp before the days of Terry Venables and Gary Lineker, can call on feared Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o.
The Balearics outfit had to overcome Apoel, Copenhagen and Spartak Moscow in the previous rounds and they scored 12 goals in the process.
Robson said: "We know they can do the business away from home. We know that because they beat Spartak Moscow 3-0 in the last round. Any team in the last 16 are capable of doing something."
Meanwhile, midfielder Jermaine Jenas has put talk of playing for England in the European Championships on hold.
Jenas wants to make sure that his performances for Robson improve so that taking part at Euro 2004 will take care of itself.
"We have been up and down throughout the season," said Jenas. "But my main thoughts are with the club at the moment. They got me in the England squad so they has to have my full commitment. The Euorpean Championships is something I'd love to be involved in but you can only give your best for the club first."
Newcastle (likely): Given; Hughes, Bramble, O'Brien, Bernard; Ambrose, Jenas, Speed, Robert; Bellamy, Shearer. Subs: Dyer, Harper, Bridges, Viana, Ameobi, Elliott.
