A TEAM of visually impaired students have been named the Yorkshire and Humber Millennium Volunteer team of the year.
Four students from Harrogate's Henshaws College won the regional award in the arts category for their organisation of college discos.
The award, which was established in 2001 to celebrate the work of volunteers across the UK, seeks to highlight those who have shown exceptional levels of dedication, achievement or personal gain.
The students, Adam Firth, 18, Richard McQuiggan, 19, Matthew Carter, 17, and Gary Price, 18, have been organising discos for their fellow students every two weeks on a Friday night.
They arrange the music, DJ-ing, lights and snack shop.
The event has proved a success with the students at the college, which caters for blind and visually impaired young people with additional disabilities.
Disco team member Matthew Carter said: "It's brilliant to have won the award. We've all worked really hard and this will make us more confident to keep doing things even better and become a stronger team."
The team will now be entered for the national awards to find the nation's Millennium Volunteers of the Year. The winners will be announced on March 28 at an awards ceremony in London.
Henshaws College Millennium Volunteer project co-ordinator Alison Searle said: "We are delighted that the disco team has been recognised with this award. They work really hard to make the college discos a success and we wish them the best of luck for the national finals."
