THE Mayor of Guisborough has been presented with a certificate declaring Guisborough to be a Fairtrade Town.
Caryn Loftus, of Fairtrade and Local Produce Around Guisborough Campaign, presented Councillor Anne Franklin, with the certificate at the town's Priory Coffee Shop, which is promoting fairly traded products.
The town has met five goals needed to achieve the status, following a campaign by the East Cleveland World Development Movement to gain support for Fairtrade products in Guisborough.
The town council passed a resolution supporting Fairtrade and a range of its products are available in the area's shops and cafes.
They are also used by a number of workplaces and community organisations.
A local steering group has been set up to ensure that there is continued commitment to the town's Fairtrade Town status.
To be part of the steering group or for further information call Allison Noel, on (01287) 610432 or (07986) 989012, or Caryn Loftus on (01287) 280335.
* Guisborough's March Speciality Market will celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight and locally produced food tomorrow.
As well as the usual stalls, free samples of tea, coffee and chocolate will be on offer at the town's Safeway store.
