PLANS to build 30 wind turbines at Coatham Bay, Redcar, are the subject of a public meeting tomorrow at Coatham Memorial Hall.
Redcar MP Vera Baird, who is backing a campaign by residents and councillors to oppose the plans, will speak at the meeting which starts at 1.30.
EDF Energy wants to build the 400ft-high turbines to supply power to 72,000 homes, but residents are worried about the visual impact on the seascape and disruption to seal and bird colonies.
There are also fears over the possible effects on shipping and water sports, such as windsurfing, which bring tourists to the area.
The proposal has already gained an option for a licence from the Crown Estates and, if approved, work could start next year.
Mrs Baird urged residents to attend tomorrow's meeting to find out the facts about the turbines and how they would affect their lives.
She said: "Redcar will not gain anything from this development, in terms of employment, fabrication or cheaper electricity."
The company expects to receive the results of an assessment on the impact on birds, sea life, the environment and the community this month, when it will apply for consent from the Department of Trade and Industry.
