TEENAGERS learnt the consequences of causing bin fires yesterday as part of a training programme.
The 16 and 17-year-olds were taking part in an Entry2Employment (E2E) event in Darlington, where they saw what it was like to commit an arson offence, be arrested and taken to court.
They observed a bin fire at Darlington Fire Station under the supervision of officers, as well as having a briefing about the fire service.
The group was also able to witness the culprit being arrested by an officer from Darlington police, who then explained to the teenagers what happens when a crime is committed.
The role play event was completed with a mock trial at Darlington Magistrates' Court, which demonstrated the legal process to the teenagers.
The event was arranged by JHP Training, in conjunction with County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, County Durham Police and South Durham Magistrates. It formed part of the E2E Citizenship 2000 programme, which provides skills for employment and citizenship, helping people to progress with their lives into the workplace or further learning, by making them more aware of the society they live in.
It is aimed at young people needing additional support because of their life experiences, rather than simply because of poor educational attainments.
Divisional Fire Officer Dave Turnbull, of County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We value every opportunity to get the fire service message across to people, and this helps teach young people about the consequences of their actions.
"The young people found the whole day worthwhile and it gave them a greater understanding of the emergency services and the legal process."
