A TEENAGE volunteer has been praised for his work in a Ferryhill community centre.
David Gash was one of a number of young people honoured with a Shrievalty Award by the High Sheriff of Durham, Peter Cook.
The 16-year-old, who attends Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College, was nominated for the award by PC Chris Metcalfe and Sandy Denney, community development officer for the Ladder Centre.
Since the start of the summer holidays, David has accrued more than 200 hours working at the centre.
He has helped children aged five to 11 engage in a range of play activities, including arts, crafts, sports and computer access.
After completing his basic food hygiene certificate, David has helped regularly in the centre's community cafe and, more recently, with the new community dinners.
He has also completed a first aid certificate and, as well as his regular planned sessions, often visits the centre to see if there are any jobs he can help with.
Ms Denney said he is seen by others as a role model, and other young people who have seen David at the centre have asked to become volunteers.
She said: "David is energetic, supportive, considerate, courteous, caring and, most importantly, reliable.
"He has proved to be invaluable over recent months and has maintained a high standard in all areas of his volunteering.
"If anyone deserves recognition for his unselfish commitment and contributions to the community it is David."
