Fire fighters had to cut a trapped motorist from the wreckage of his car after it careered into a wall.
The 28-year-old broke his neck and collar bone and punctured a lung after losing control of his car - a Toyota - on Acklam Road, Middlesbrough, near its junction with Burlam Road.
The driver had been travelling north along the road when the car failed to negotiate a bend and crashed into a sign and wall at a petrol station.
He was taken to the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough and Cleveland Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which occurred at about 9.50pm on Monday, to contact them on (01642) 301552.
