A man was recovering in hospital today after becoming trapped in a disused lead mine with a broken leg.
The man, aged in his 40s, got into difficulties at the mine in Gunnerside, Swaledale in North Yorkshire on Thursday night.
Emergency services arrived at the mine at 10pm and worked for four hours to free him.
Involved in the operation were the Swaledale Fell Rescue team, who freed him from his position several feet down and a helicopter from RAF Kinloss, which took him to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
North Yorkshire Police said the man was believed to be from the Richmond area of North Yorkshire.
