GOLDEN GLORY will be here by the time you are reading this, perhaps over your cornflakes, or at the office in coffee break time, as we go to press before the final afternoon of the Cheltenham Festival, and Ferdy Murphy's Truckers Tavern has yet to run.
But the signs were hopeful. Already, Dominikus ran well in the Fulke Walwyn-Kim Muir on Tuesday, to come fourth in that amateur riders' event, and Inn Antique ran creditably for a long way on Wednesday in the Mildmay of Flete, but was seventh.
Up at Sedgefield on Tuesday, Neil Mulholland took a Murphy-trained double on the Tuesday, both Red Society and Looking Forward performing well. The young conditional had also won at Newcastle for trainer Hamish Alexander during the weekend.
Tim Easterby sent out Edmo Heights to win at Gosforth Park and as we write, we look forward to Thursday's run in the Triumph Hurdle by Edmo Yewkay in the Cotswolds. Turgeonev ran very well in the Mildmay of Flete, but could only manage fifth.
Mary Reveley was on top form at Ayr on Saturday, both My Line and Maceo going in, but at present, has not broken her Cheltenham duck, Hidden Bounty being pulled up the first day.
Howard Johnson and new owners Graham and Andrea Wylie too have not to press yet had their first winner, but Graham Lee rode a tremendous race on the favourite, Inglis Drever, to come second to Fundamentalist (Twiston Davies, Carl Llewellyn) in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices Hurdle on Wednesday.
Another who has not yet seen his first winner at Prestbury Park as a trainer is Richard Guest. For example, Our Armageddon unseated Larry McGrath in the Arkle and Tyneandthyneagain was pulled up in the National Hunt Chase. Guest fared better at Ayr where Just The Jobe won for owner-breeder Norman Mason
Interestingly, another bred by Mason won for Harry Hogarth at Carlisle, when David O'Meara partnered Red Rampage. Hogarth Racing, run by the Stillington permit holder, also owns Tusk, well fancied for the Triumph Hurdle yesterday.
Mick Easterby took the Saturday bumper (National Hunt flat race) at Sandown, a Listed race for mares only, with Marsh Run. Third was Richard Fahey with Sabreflight and fifth, Mary Reveley, with Diamond Sal.
Easterby's rider, amateur Tom Greenall, also put up a good show in the Kim Muir, coming third on the Irish raider Ibis Rochelais.
Lord Manton, when he was plain Milo Watson, always rode for Easterby and he and his father had many a horse with him.
On Friday at Sandown, his Lordship landed the Barclays Handicap Hurdle, for amateur military riders, for the second year on Silk Trader, trained in Derbyshire by John Mackie.
He came only ninth and last finisher, however, in the Grand Military later.
Annabel Armitage sent out the fourth in the Queen Mother hunter chase later, Royal Crimson, under Major Alers-Hankey (Lord Manton was fifth on Raffles Rooster).
