Darlington Harriers and Athletic Club - There was a strong turnout from the Harriers at the 22nd Liberata Redcar half-marathon on Sunday, March 14 and with considerable success.

In strong windy conditions Bernadette Taylor continued her impressive form with a winning run in the female races.

Martin Granger finished fifth out of 822 finishers in a time of 1:15.32 closely followed by Joe McCready in sixth place in 1:15.55. Harry Prince one of the Harriers' longest serving members made the trip to Berkshire to take part in the Reading Half Marathon completing the 13.1 mile course in 1hr 33 mins. Jack Mason completed the Baildon Boundary Way Multi Terrain Half marathon in the morning in a time of 1.32.52. Not content with that he then made his way to Richmond to take part in the sixth and final NYSD cross country fixture, helping the Senior men's team to remain in third position.

Senior Men: Joe McCreedy finishing in his highest position to date in fifth place 32.24. Quakers RC

Icumulative totals have now been issued for the end of NYSD Cross Country season and the Quaker ladies cleaned up on individual medals. Sarah and Katherine James had an outstanding season. Sarah finished as second under-17 girl with 43 points (only three points behind the overall leader) and Katherine finished third with 38 points.

Dawn Richardson and Caroline Davies will also receive medals for finishing 7th and 10th respectively. Annette Clarke and Denise Kelvey-Brown battled it out for 4th and 5th position to win medals in the veteran ladies races. Julie Giblin also finished 9th overall with 16 points, Beverley Snook, 13th, 7 points and Diane Wright, 16th, 2 points. Jean Southren finished 20th with 1 point in the senior ladies race.

In the senior men, Alasdair Tatham finished 12th overall with 27 points, despite only competing in a few races due to marathon training.

In the team cumulative totals, the under 13 girls were 8th out of 11. The ladies team finished 2nd as anticipated with 75 points, just 1 point behind leaders Loftus. And the men finished 9th out of 15 with 29 points.

In the President's Aggregate Trophy, the Quakers Running Club finished 11th out of 18 teams.

On Sunday, 28 Quakers took to the windy roads of Redcar to compete in their annual half marathon, a large number of which were new members. First home as usual was Ian Scott who finished 23rd out of 822 runners in a time of 1:19:40 taking the 1st over 50 prize.

Newton Aycliffe

Sue Milburn has had an excellent season in the North Yorkshire and South Durham cross country league, winning the individual league title in the over-40s ladies section, competing in four fixtures over the winter, Sue won three races and was second in the other one accumulating 47 points, seven more than her nearest rival.

Tracy Barker, in her first season of cross country running, finished a promising 6th in the individual league, for the over 35s in the ladies section, with 21 points and gaining a league medal.

Adam Gibson finished runner up in the under 17 mens individual placing. He's looking forward to joining the senior ranks next season.

Newton Aycliffe's senior mens team were the most improved team in the league, finishing 8th in the league table, against 14th last year, and with several under 17 men stepping up into the senior ranks next year along with newcomer Carl Mustell, the senior men's team looks very promising.

At the national schools cross country championships held in Maidstone on Saturday, March 13, Lewis Moses showed he is back to his best form, finishing 29th in the senior boys event. He still has next year in this age group.

On March 14 at Redcar the club's long distance runners competed in the popular Redcar half-marathon, in a field of 822 runners Michael O'Sullivan lead the club home, finishing in a time of 1hour 23mins 41secs, finishing 52nd. Next for Newton Aycliffe was Julie Atkinson finishing 7th lady home, 2nd over 35, in a time of 1hour 34mins 03secs, Patrick Robson 1hour 34mins 51secs for 183rd position, followed by John Burnside 1hour 35mins 40secs for 196th position, Tony Brewer in 1hour 38mins 38secs for 243rd position.

Shildon

The English Schools Championshps at Maidston on March 13 saw the end of Shildon's cross country season. Four athletes from the club represented Durham Schools over another tough course.

Fourteen-year-old Warren Roberts, competing in the boys intermediate age group for under-16s, turned in another fine performance, coming home 33rd in a field of 302 finishers and was Durham's third counter; the team being 9th.

Alex Snook also ran well in the intermediate girls race. Despite falling early in the race she battled through the field of 340 athletes and finished 133rd.

In the junior boys race Khalil Thompson was disappointed to finish 65th but should not feel too bad as he has been running with a painful foot injury that has obviously hindered his performance.

Natalie Owens, in the senior girls race was also disappointed with her run but still managed to be the Durham team's 4th counter.

The squad will now be concentrating on training for the track season so anyone who is interested are welcome at the stadium on Mondays and Wednesdays to sample the training.
