Last Sunday's Holderness point to point was the 50th to take place at Dalton Park.
The Members race, a competitive affair, was fittingly won by Dolphin Square who is owned by the meeting's chairman William Bethell. Given an enterprising ride by Niall Saville, Dolphin Square made every yard of the running.
The favourite Nordic Crest (T Rose), ridden by Tom Greenall and the Lord Manton-owned and ridden horse Schoolhouse Walk were always close up. Despite having to be pushed along Dolphin Square ran on well; he shook off the attention of his pursuers approaching the last and kept on well for a three- length win. Schoolhouse Walk finished second two lengths in front of Nordic Crest who was third.
Tom Greenall landed a double. The first leg came in the Mens Open on High Peak (Middleton), owned by his trainer David Easterby. High Peak may have been fortunate here as Mademist Sam who travelled well throughout went clear four from home.
As High Peak was ridden behind, Mademist Sam looked in command rounding the home turn. Meeting the second last four lengths clear he fell, leaving High Peak to on his own in front.
Victory looked as if it was going to be comfortable but with High Peak not finding a lot on the run-in, Blank Cheque (Pendle), ridden by trainer David Coates, finished with a real rattle and only failed by a head to catch High Peak. Blank Cheque had run in snatches, leading early but then dropping out to appear to be well beaten until his late charge. Blank Cheque finished second two lengths clear of the Tinkler-owned and trained Mr Pendleberry (Middleton). He held that place almost throughout the race under Nicky Tinkler.
Greenall's second leg, which was on another David Easterby horse, came in the Restricted Race when the five-year-old Highfields (Lord Darsbury) followed up his Bedale Maiden success.
The Mary Sowersby-trained Purple Jean (T Stubbins/Holderness), ridden by Guy Brewer, led two from home. High Fields challenged at the last and running on well came clear to win by three lengths. Purple Jean finished second, ten lengths in front of long-time leader Wilfie Wild (A Jackson/Cleveland), who was ridden and trained by Lynne Ward.
The Ladies Open was dominated by Richard Chew's Texas Ranger (Middleton), who was ridden by his trainer Jo Foster. Making every yard of the running, there was only Pharlindo who could live with the six-year-old's pace. Pharlindo kept in touch until Texas Ranger pulled well clear four from home and galloped on in good style to record a distance win. Pharlindo looked set for second but he was pulled up lame after the second last. This left the favourite, Silver Groom (T Rose/Holderness), to take second. Ridden by Jacquelin Coward, he never looked like getting into the race. The Tina Jackson trained and ridden Sally Scally (H Thompson/Cleveland), making her seasonal debut, looked in need of the run and finished a distance back in third.
There was a great finish to the Second Division of the Maiden where Staple Sound (R Dobson/Bramham), Just A Man (R Mason/Middleton), Fairmile Star and the Tim Sharpe trained I'm No Fairy (York & Ainsty) all jumped the last together.
At the fence long-time leader Fairmile Star fell; in a great battle down the run-in the point debutante I'm No Fairy led on the line, David Thomas riding. A head back in second was Staple Sound who was ridden by Wayne Burnell. Three lengths back in third was the favourite Just A Man who was ridden by Ben Woodhouse.
The Mares Maiden looked a substandard affair but the winner, Shelia Mollet's Near And Phar (Burton), took it in the style of a good horse. Patiently ridden by Sarah Buckley, the nine-year-old was well-off the pace in the early stages. She made smooth headway on the final circuit, took it up three from home and cruised to a ten- length win.
Aunt Gladys (J Payne/Blankney), who finished second under Guy Brewer, and Rising Talisker (D Hill/York & Ainsty), who was third, were made to look very one-paced by the winner.
Snizort (P Watson/York & Ainsty), a 190,000gs purchase as a yearling, took the First Division of the Maiden. The Mary Sowersby trained horse quickened to lead at the last and ran on well for Guy Brewer to win by six lengths. Jill Jones' Bobby Buttons (Cleveland) finished second under Nigel Tutty. The favourite made all until blundering two from home.
* On Saturday the Hurworth point to point is at Hutton Rudby, first race 12.30.
