Michael Owens grabbed a late, late goal to complete a terrific comeback against Town Castle Rovers on Sunday which has almost assured Coxhoe of the divisional title.

The Under-15s were trailing 3-1 with just six minutes to play but showed tremendous spirit to snatch victory and three vital points to put Bobby Orton's side within reach of promotion from Division Two of the Russell Foster Tyne and Wear Youth League.

The team needs just one more win from their remaining four matches and are home to Whitburn on Sunday.

Last Sunday's game saw Coxhoe take the lead with a Nathan Ward strike but they were unable to build on it and ended up looking disjointed. They had to reply on goalkeeper Tom Orton to keep them in the game against a Rovers team desperate for the points to give themselves a chance of snatching the title.

Deep into injury time, and with Coxhoe still leading thanks to Ward's strike, Rovers were awarded a debatable penalty which they successfully converted to level the scores.

After the half-time break, and with manager Orton having decided to persevere with the formation, Coxhoe continued to falter; failing to win the ball in midfield and looking dodgy at the back and this resulted in two uncharacteristic errors from the normally dependable centre-back Ben Raine which put Rovers into a 3-1 lead.

Not long after the third goal some desperate defending by Coxhoe No. 1 Orton, who saved at the foot of the post, and defender Paul Harnett, who quickly followed-up to clear from the goal-line, kept the team in with a chance and their heroics proved vital.

Manager Orton then tinkered with the formation and made a triple substitution with John Dodd, David Taylor and Kieron Thompson all entering the fray and it wasn't too long before Owen made it 3-2 with his first of the game.

Ward then snatched what he surely must have thought was going to be a point when he made it 3-3, but better was to come for Coxhoe.

With seconds remaining a through-ball sent Liam Short racing away and he took the ball past one man and passed to Owens who kept his cool under pressure from two defenders to fire past the keeper to complete a hugely satisfying victory.

The deserved victory was ample reward as every player put in a determined performance.

This Sunday's match against Whitburn takes place at Spennymoor United's Brewery Field ground, kicking-off at 2pm but Coxhoe are also in action this evening at Moors' UniBond League ground.

Playing for the Coxhoe Invitation Cup, Fishburn provide the opposition, the game kicks-off at 7pm and admission is £1 with all proceeds going to Spennymoor's fundraising efforts to help replace the clubhouse which was destroyed at Christmas.

Paul Noble, Ryan Monaghan and Neil Hooks saw to it that Consett remained pointless.

Riverside Chester-le-Street

The Under-13s bowed out of the Ray Foster Cup in the quarter-final to a well organised and good City of Durham side. A goal down within 60 seconds, Riverside battled well and never gave up but on the day were beaten by the better side. Mark Brooms man of the match award was deserved.

Marton

Playing at home to North Ormesby, after an untidy start Marton settled down and started to create goal-scoring opportunities. The visitors' keeper and poor finishing kept the score level but the deadlock was finally broken midway through the first half, Ben Worton powerfully heading past the keeper from a Rob Hill corner for Marton to take a deserved lead.

North Ormesby, to their credit, worked hard and contested for every ball but as the game progressed the home side grew in confidence and it was no surprise when they added to their score.

Chris Johnston got on the end of a great ball from Spence to drill the ball home and soon after Jack Henderson rounded off a good move involving Carroll and Hill to blast the ball past the keeper.

North Ormesby came out for the second half determined to make a game of it and were rewarded for their play with a goal, the visitors striker was quickest to react in a goal mouth scramble to coolly round the stranded keeper Parker to slot home.

Hopes of a come back were dashed almost immediately when Johnston scored again to preserve the home side's three-goal advantage and put the result beyond doubt. Further goals from Rowney, Tymon and Shaun Kell completed the scoring.
