The funeral of a fruit and veg trader who became known as the ''Metric Martyr'' after he was convicted of selling bananas in pounds and ounces was being held today.
Greengrocer Steven Thoburn died from a suspected heart attack at his home in Sunderland on Sunday, March 14, aged 39.
He leaves a wife Leigh, 30, and three children Rhys, 13, Georgia, seven, and two-year-old Jay.
Mr Thoburn, who lived in the Roker area of the city, was prosecuted by Sunderland City Council for breaching the Weights and Measures Act after selling bananas by the pound from his market stall.
His imperial scales were confiscated and he was given a six-month conditional discharge in 2001.
Mr Thoburn's battle with the authorities won him international backing, as he and another four traders mounted a series of legal challenges against their prosecution.
They continued their fight until earlier this year when the European Court of Human Rights ruled an appeal was inadmissible.
His funeral was being held in St Benet's Church, Roker, Sunderland, before a cremation service.
A reception for friends and family was following at the nearby Stadium of Light football ground.
