COMMUNITY centres are at the heart of plans to improve adult learning in villages.
Senior area worker for the Dales Stuart Dexter said he is looking forward to working closely with community centres in Weardale and Teesdale in his new role.
The 32-year-old was appointed to the area through Education in the Community, part of Durham County Council, in January.
Based at King James I Community College, in Bishop Auckland, his key aim is to develop adult education in the community by organising a wide range of classes.
He said: "I will be working with some of the bigger community centres in the area such as Stanhope CA, King James I Community College and Willington Parkside, as well as smaller, more rural centres.
"A lot of adults would like to take on a new hobby or interest. but quite often the problem is transport and getting to classes.
"I am here to listen to the needs of the local communities, and if villagers indicate that they want to learn something different I will do what I can to get what they want.''
Classes being delivered in the area include basic computer skills, flower arranging, languages and arts and crafts.
Taster sessions will show residents what is on offer. The next is at King James I Community College on Thursday, April 1, from 6pm to 9pm.
There will also be a tutor conference on Saturday at the Manor House Hotel, West Auckland, aimed at encouraging and supporting tutors who might want to take classes in community centres.
