A playground for children of all ages is to be created in the site of the old Town Moor play area in Hartlepool.
The old play area is being transformed and will feature a range of play equipment including cone climbers and superswings.
All the equipment will be surrounded by a soft safety surface, and the area will be fenced in and locked at night.
The £50,000 project has been devised following consultation with schools and residents.
It is expected to be completed in time for the Easter holidays.
The scheme is being funded by the North Hartlepool Partnership.
Councillor Denis Waller, chairman of the partnership, said: "The old play area was certainly showing its age and was very much in need of this major revamp to meet the needs of modern youngsters.
"We are delighted to be funding the project, which will create a smart, stimulating and safe new environment in which children can play."
