POLICE are taking to the airwaves in in a bid to encourage people to "rat on the rats".

The North Yorkshire force will run a series of Crimestoppers-sponsored radio commercials from Saturday urging listeners to call about active criminals in their area.

Assistant Chief Constable David Collins said: "Intelligence is the lifeblood of modern policing, and a great deal of valuable intelligence comes from members of the public.

"Our Rat on the Rats campaign urges residents to call Crimestoppers with the kind of information we need to lock away law-breakers."

The tough-talking 30-second commercials start: "Criminals - they're the rats that plague North Yorkshire's communities. And you can help clear out these vermin."

It appeals for public help in nailing law-breakers such as those dealing in stolen goods, violent thugs, burglars and car thieves.

The campaign has brought a steady flow of useful intelligence to the police, and Mr Collins is hopeful the radio campaign will provide a boost.

The scheme uses the dedicated Crimestoppers number - 0800 555111 - so that callers can remain anonymous, and cash rewards are available.
