DURHAM have suffered a blow with the news that South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs will be available for less than half of his first season in county cricket, writes Tim Wellock.
They have signed Western Australia batsman Marcus North as cover and he will return to the duties he has fulfilled for the last few seasons as the professional for Gateshead Fell from early May to July 10.
Durham stepped in smartly to sign Gibbs as early as July last year when they heard he wanted to play county cricket this season.
As one of the world's most thrilling stroke-players his arrival at Riverside has been keenly anticipated, and it was thought he would be available from the start of the season until mid-August.
But after the current tour of New Zealand finishes he is required by Western Province for the launch of a Twenty20 competition in South Africa and if, as expected, they reach the final, that is on May 1.
He will also have to leave on July 10 as South Africa's tour to Sri Lanka has been brought forward.
It means Gibbs will be available for only six of Durham's 16 championship matches, starting with the game against Essex at Riverside on May 7. His home debut should come two days earlier against Sussex in the C & G Trophy.
Durham had to move quickly to land North, who was also under consideration by Derbyshire to replace Michael di Venuto, who is likely to miss the whole season after a back operation.
North, 24, is a left-handed batsman who also bowls off-spin. He has scored over 1,000 runs at 56.52 for Western Australia this season, making him the fifth-highest run-scorer in Australian domestic cricket.
Among those ahead of him are former Durham players Simon Katich and Brad Hodge.
Durham captain Jon Lewis said: "Marcus is a proven run-scorer and can also contribute a few overs. His signing will give us some continuity through the season."
North, who has played for the Durham Board Xl, said: "I am delighted to be given the opportunity to play first-class cricket in England, especially with Durham. My wife is from the North-East and the region is a second home to me."
* Organisations wishing to make block bookings for Durham's Twenty20 match at home to Lancashire, or for any National League game, have been made a cashback offer by the club.
For every adult ticket booked at £10 they will get £4.50 back. The offer also applies to season tickets priced at £15 for three home Twenty20 matches and is available to any organisation who need to raise money. For further details ring 0191 387 1717, ext 2873.
