A NEW business centre already in the running for a design award has officially opened.
The £1.63m Derwentside Business Centre, on Consett Business Park, aims to encourage more small and medium-sized enterprises in the electronics industry to settle in north-west Durham.
It was officially opened by Margaret Fay, chairman of regional development agency One NorthEast. She said: "There is a shortage of high quality accommodation that can support small businesses in County Durham. I am delighted that the opening of this centre will go a good way to respond to this need.
"I am certain that this purpose-built centre, coupled with the excellent broadband access that Derwentside now enjoys, will be a major draw for small and medium-sized enterprises looking to relocate in the area."
The building's design has been put forward for the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors North-East Renaissance Awards.
