ORGANISERS of a world title event are trying to trace the reigning champion so he can defend his crown.
George Hood shocked the cutlery community last year when he lifted the World Spoon Playing Championships at the first attempt.
The 77-year-old former railwayman beat previous champion Bert Draycott, who had held the title for 30 years, with a virtuoso performance.
The championship forms part of the annual Trimdon Festival and organisers are putting the finishing touches to this year's event.
They are keen for George, from Pelaw, near Gateshead, to defend his title - but have lost touch with him.
Organiser Ron Passfield said: "We've gone through the telephone directory but cannot find George. He's got the championship spoon and the plaque, and we'd love him to take part again."
This year's championships will be held in the Bird in Hand pub, Trimdon Village, on September 4.
Anyone who knows Mr Hood's whereabouts is asked to contact Andrew White at The Northern Echo, on (01325) 505069.
