INITIAL results from a random survey of 3,000 English sheep farmers by the the English Beef and Lamb Executive Better Returns Programme has shown that half of those who replied were less than satisfied with their ability to achieve better returns for their lambs.
The survey, carried out by Reading University in conjunction with BRP earlier this year, questioned sheep producers on various aspects of their approach to producing and marketing sheep.
It will be used to fine-tune the content of BRP events over the next two years.
"The responses are still being processed, but early indications confirm our original belief that there is a real need for what the BRP is offering in terms of sharpening selection skills and promoting the benefits of using higher index rams," said Eblex BRP project manager Chris Lloyd.
Another initial finding is that 56pc of respondents intend to consult prices to determine when and where to sell their lambs.
A full analysis of the BRP survey results will be completed later this spring. Funded by a £1.5m Defra grant and delivered by Eblex, the BRP aims to deliver benefits worth an estimated £12m to the English sheep industry.
