SOMEWHERE in the UK there is a lucky child who will win an all-expenses flight to South Africa as first prize in a foreign language competition.
Last year's winner Lucy Smith, 11, a pupil at the Holy Trinity School, Stockton, mastered three languages to take the top prize in last year's pilot Euro Language Challenge, beating 4,500 other competitors.
She hopes that either she or one of her classmates can repeat that success. Julie Soper, form teacher, has entered all 36 children again this year.
This year's challenge aims to raise £10,000 from a £2 per child entry fee for a charity dedicated to providing interactive learning on DVD
This year's challenge involves learning Italian, Russian and Zulu in ten months through Euro Talk's CD Rom.
The winner of the final in November will be flown to South Africa to open a classroom made from an adapted shipping container- and test their knowledge of Zulu.
